What Alpine is suited for

Alpine is the smallest system in our range: a few megabytes, musl and BusyBox instead of glibc and the GNU tools, OpenRC as the init system. The usual base for Docker images and for individual services that need to run with little RAM.

Versions and updates

Each Alpine version is supported for two years. A new version is released every six months. Packages are installed with apk. Upgrading to the next version means changing one entry in the package repositories and running apk upgrade.

In the customer portal

  • Reinstallation with a different operating system
  • Browser console
  • Rescue system
  • Start, stop and restart
  • Root password and SSH access
  • Primary IP and reverse DNS
  • Backups with download and restore
  • Resource usage and traffic

Key features of Alpine

Small and resource-efficient

A freshly installed Alpine takes up a few megabytes and needs hardly any RAM. For individual services, the smallest plan is therefore often sufficient.

apk package management

The package selection covers web servers, databases, programming languages and tools. You will already know much of it from Alpine-based Docker images.

musl and BusyBox

Alpine uses musl instead of glibc and BusyBox instead of the GNU tools. Prebuilt binaries for glibc do not run out of the box, but source packages and apk packages do.

OpenRC instead of systemd

Services are managed with rc-service and rc-update. Software that comes with systemd units needs a short OpenRC init script.

Container or fully virtualized

We offer Alpine as a container with Incus.

Container with Incus

Alpine 3.24, 3.23

Shares the host system's kernel, starts in seconds and is the lower-priced option. Suitable for web servers, databases, applications and Docker.

Contract terms

Term of 12 months

Minimum term for new orders. After that, the contract continues for an indefinite period and is cancellable with one month's notice. For business customers 12 months, then renewal for twelve months at a time, cancellation with a notice period of three months to the end of the term.

14-day right of withdrawal

Consumers can withdraw from the contract within fourteen days of its conclusion without giving any reason.

No setup fee

You pay only the monthly price. All prices include VAT.

.de domain included

A .de domain is included in the plan for the entire contract term, not just in the first year.

Annual payment 5% cheaper

If you pay twelve months in advance, the price is reduced by 5%. The term is then twelve months. Without a renewal, the contract then continues at the monthly price.

Business customers: up to 15% discount

Business customers can choose to pay 24 months (10% discount) or 36 months (15% discount) in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is Alpine the right choice for?
For individual, lightweight services and for anything you already know as an Alpine-based Docker image. For classic web hosting with many ready-made packages, Debian or Ubuntu are more convenient.
Does all software run on Alpine?
Not all software. Prebuilt binaries for glibc do not run without a compatibility layer. Software available as an apk package or as source code does.
How long is an Alpine version supported?
Two years from release. Alpine 3.24 was released in May 2026, Alpine 3.23 in November 2025.
Which Alpine version do I get?
Alpine 3.24 and Alpine 3.23. You select the version when you order.
Do I have full root access?
Yes. You have full administrator access and can install any software you need.
Can I change the operating system later?
Yes. You start the reinstallation in the customer portal and select a different system. The server is then reachable again within a few minutes. The data on the server is deleted in the process.
How do I reach the server if there is a fault?
Through the browser console, even if the server has no network connection. There is also a rescue system that you can use to back up files and reset the password.
Is traffic limited?
No. Traffic is unlimited and not throttled. Fair use applies in accordance with section 3.2 of our Terms and Conditions.
Where is the server located?
In an ISO 27001 certified data center in Germany.

Other operating systems: Ubuntu Debian Devuan AlmaLinux Rocky Linux Fedora
