Setting up Project Zomboid mods from the Steam Workshop

The server downloads mods from the Steam Workshop itself. You do not need to upload anything, but you need to provide two details for each mod, and this is where it usually goes wrong. Mods are available from Flex M.

The two details

  • Workshop ID: the long number in the URL of the Workshop page, after ?id=. The server uses it to download the mod.
  • Mod ID: a short name assigned by the author. The game uses it to enable the mod. It is usually listed at the bottom of the Workshop page under "Mod ID". Some mods include several.

If the Workshop ID is missing, nothing is downloaded. If the Mod ID is missing, the mod is on the server but not enabled. This is the most common cause when "the mod does not work".

One mod, several Mod IDs

Some collections include several Mod IDs under one Workshop ID. In that case, enter all the Mod IDs you actually want to use. The Workshop page usually lists them in full.

The order matters

Mods are loaded in the order entered. If one mod builds on another, the underlying mod must be entered first. Map and expansion mods usually state this dependency in their description.

Mods for players

The game downloads the mods of the server when a player joins. If a mod is present in a different version, the server rejects the connection and names the mod.

After every change: restart

The server reads the mod list at startup. Changes made while it is running have no effect. When saving, you choose "Nur speichern" (Save only) or "Speichern und neu starten" (Save and restart). The server does not restart unless you choose to. Expect some waiting time after the restart, because the server first downloads the new mods.

Map mods

Map mods that bring their own map cannot be used on our servers. You can choose from the five starting areas of the game: Muldraugh, West Point, Riverside, Rosewood and March Ridge.

Restore

The world is backed up daily and can be reset to an earlier state. Before major changes to your mods, this is the safe approach.
