Setting up a web radio station: on air with BUTT or Mixxx
Your station runs on its own Icecast server. You broadcast live with the software you already use, and without a live connection the playlist keeps playing. You find all details from this guide in the customer portal with your Webradio.
Access details
| Field in the software | Value |
|---|---|
| Server type | Icecast |
| Address (host) | Your station name, e.g. mystation.radio.glowfish.de |
| Port | the source port from the customer portal |
| Mount | the name of the channel, e.g. /live |
| User | source |
| Password | the password of the channel |
| SSL/TLS | off |
The customer portal shows each value with a copy button.
Format and bitrate
Each channel has a fixed format, MP3 or AAC. Your broadcasting software must send exactly this format, at no more than the bitrate of your plan. Otherwise, the server disconnects. You can see the reason in the customer portal under "Zuletzt abgelehnt" (Last rejected).
| Plan | Simultaneous listeners | Bitrate up to | Channels | Price per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Webradio 50 | 50 | 128 kbit/s | 1 | €7.00 |
| Webradio 200 | 200 | 320 kbit/s | 3 | €13.00 |
Settings in BUTT
- Under Settings → Main → Server, click ADD.
- Set Type to Icecast, enter the address, port, password and mountpoint, and set Icecast user =
sourceand TLS off. - Under Settings → Audio, select the codec (MP3 or AAC) and bitrate to match the channel.
- Connect with the play button. Under Settings → Stream, you can also send the current track title, which is displayed to your listeners.
Settings in Mixxx
- Open Options → Preferences → Live Broadcasting.
- Set Type = Icecast 2 and enter host, port, mount, login
sourceand password. - Under Encoding, select the format and bitrate to match the channel.
- Turn on Enable Live Broadcasting.
Any other software that can send to Icecast connects with the same details.
Playlist: your station keeps running
Upload music files in the customer portal, up to 64 MB per file. They are played in random order whenever nobody is broadcasting live. When your live connection starts, listeners switch to you automatically and back to the playlist when it ends. The files are converted to the format and bitrate of the channel.
How your listeners tune in
- Stream URL:
https://mystation.radio.glowfish.de/livefor websites, apps and radio directories. - Player: The customer portal provides ready-made code for your website and a link for sharing.
- Mobile (Webradio 200): an additional URL at 128 kbit/s that uses less mobile data. Both URLs count together toward the listener limit.
- Custom domain: Enter the name in the customer portal and point it to your station name with a CNAME record. The HTTPS certificate is then created automatically.
Recording (Webradio 200)
On request, every live broadcast is recorded as a separate file and kept for 90 days. In the customer portal, you can download recordings or add them to the playlist.
Track list for GEMA and GVL
Every track played is logged with date, time, artist and title, both live and from the playlist. You download the list in the customer portal as a CSV file for your report. You need your own license from GEMA and GVL as soon as you broadcast music.
If the connection fails
- Rejected: the format or bitrate does not match the channel. The reason is shown in the customer portal.
- Wrong password: the user must be
source, and the password applies per channel. - No connection: turn off SSL/TLS in the software and use the source port, not the listener port.
