Managing your domain's DNS records
You manage the DNS records for every domain you have with us yourself. Changes go to our name servers immediately. How quickly they take effect everywhere depends on the TTL of the previous record.
Available record types
| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| A / AAAA | Name points to an IPv4 or IPv6 address, for example your server |
| CNAME | Name is an alias for another name |
| MX | Mail server of the domain |
| TXT | Verifications for services, SPF, DKIM, DMARC |
| SRV | Services with a port, for example for games, telephony or chat |
| CAA | which certificate authorities may issue certificates |
| NS | delegating a subdomain to other name servers |
| TLSA | DANE: publishing your server's certificate in DNS |
You set the TTL per record. Records that belong to your plan, for example for your website and mailboxes, are displayed and maintained by us.
Email security wizards
- SPF: defines which servers may send on behalf of your domain.
- DKIM: publishes the public key for the signature of your emails.
- DMARC: tells receiving servers what to do with emails without a valid signature.
- DANE: generates the TLSA record from your server's certificate.
You fill in a few fields and the wizard writes the record in the correct format.
Common tasks
- Pointing a domain to your own server: an A record for
@andwwwwith the IP address of the server. With a vServer from us, it is even simpler: connect the domain to the server, and we set the records ourselves and update them when the IP address changes. - Verifying a service (for example Google Search Console, Microsoft 365): a TXT record with the value provided by the service.
- Using an external email provider: MX records pointing to the provider's servers, plus SPF and DKIM via the wizards.
- Game server under your own name: an SRV record, if the game supports it (for example Minecraft:
_minecraft._tcp).
