Switching scenes automatically

Our server continuously measures the bitrate of your connection. If it falls below a threshold, the server switches the scene in your OBS and switches back as soon as the connection is stable again.

The three scenes

LIVE: normal operation
Your camera feed while the connection is stable.
LOW: weak connection
The picture is still transmitted, but at a low bitrate. A common choice here is the same camera view with a discreet notice, or a smaller picture with a wider border.
BRB: connection lost
Your break screen or a short clip. This is the most important of the three scenes: it determines what viewers see when you drive through a tunnel.

You enter the names in the customer portal. They must be written exactly as in OBS, including upper and lower case.

The thresholds

ValueMeaningProven value
Niedrig (Low) Below this bitrate, the scene switches 400 kbit/s
Laufzeit (RTT) From this round-trip time (RTT) upward, the scene also switches 3500 ms
Abbruch (Offline) Separate threshold for "connection completely lost" usually unused

These values come from ongoing operation. A high threshold, such as one third of your own bitrate, causes a switch with every normal fluctuation of the mobile connection. A low threshold works better: only at a very low bitrate is the break screen the better choice.

The "Abbruch" threshold is empty by default.

Switching too often is more unpleasant than a weak connection. If the scene keeps jumping back and forth, set the threshold for LOW lower. A few seconds of lower quality are more pleasant for viewers than constant scene changes.

Switching back

As soon as the connection recovers, the scene switches back to LIVE. Whether this happens immediately or only after the connection has been stable for a while is set in the customer portal. We advise against switching back immediately. On trips with many short dead spots, the picture would otherwise jump back and forth every few seconds. The default setting therefore waits.

Also preset: the scene is only switched while OBS is actually streaming. This way, your scene stays untouched while you set things up.

Chat commands

You connect Twitch or Kick in the customer portal via "Chat verbinden" (Connect chat). After that, the relay reports every switch in the chat. You can query the status with !bitrate.

We are happy to suggest suitable values. Write to us at info@glowfish.de with your usual bitrate and your encoder, and we will suggest suitable thresholds.
