Setting up DynDNS on a Fritz!Box

Your internet connection receives a new IP address every time it connects. So that you can still always reach your network, the Fritz!Box reports each new address to our DNS service. You set this up once, and after that it runs automatically.

This requires our DynDNS Hosting product. Once your order has been approved, we send you an email with the complete update URL and the password.

Step by step

  1. Open fritz.box in your browser and log in.
  2. Click Internet on the left, then Permit Access.
  3. Switch to the DynDNS tab at the top.
  4. Enable the Use DynDNS option.
  5. Select User-defined as the provider.
  6. Enter the values from our email (see the table below). Enter the password twice.
  7. Click Apply.

Which value goes in which field

Field in the Fritz!Box What to enter
Update URL The complete address from our email, unchanged
Domain name Your hostname, for example zuhause.dynipdns.de
Username Any value. The field is not evaluated. Enter something, otherwise the Fritz!Box does not accept the input
Password The access key from our email

Checking the setup

Shortly after you apply the settings, the Fritz!Box shows on the DynDNS tab that the login was successful. You can also check it yourself: on any computer, enter your hostname at the command prompt, as in ping zuhause.dynipdns.de, and compare the address shown with the IP address that the Fritz!Box displays under Internet, Online Monitor.

IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time

Our update URL contains two placeholders: <ipaddr> for the IPv4 address and <ip6addr> for the IPv6 address. The Fritz!Box fills in both automatically. This makes your hostname reachable via both address types without you having to change anything.

Connection without a dedicated IPv4 address? With some cable and fiber connections (“DS-Lite”), the provider does not assign a dedicated IPv4 address. In that case, the first placeholder stays empty and only the IPv6 address is entered. Your connection is then reachable via IPv6, but not for devices and connections that only support IPv4.

Other devices

Speedport

Under Internet, Dynamisches DNS (Internet, Dynamic DNS), select the provider “Anderer Anbieter” (other provider), enter dnsupdate.perfect-server.de as the update server, plus your hostname and the access key as the password.

Ubiquiti (UniFi, EdgeRouter)

Select dyndns as the service and enter dnsupdate.perfect-server.de as the server. Hostname and password as above.

ddclient on Linux

In /etc/ddclient.conf: protocol=dyndns2, server=dnsupdate.perfect-server.de, login= any value, password= the access key, and the hostname below these lines.

Common errors

The Fritz!Box reports a login error
Usually the password was not copied completely. Make sure there is no space at the beginning or end.
The name points to an old address
After a forced disconnection, it takes up to one minute. If the address stays wrong for longer, check whether a second DynDNS entry is still active in the Fritz!Box.
I still cannot reach my device from outside
This means the name is correct, but port forwarding is missing. Set it up under Internet, Permit Access, Port Sharing. With connections that use a shared IPv4 address (DS-Lite), access via IPv4 is technically not possible. In that case, ask your provider for a public IPv4 address.
Can I use my own domain?
On request. Tell us the domain or subdomain you want to use. The domain can be registered with us or elsewhere. If it is registered elsewhere, we need a record there that points to our DNS service.
How quickly does a new address take effect?
The records are valid for 60 seconds. It only takes longer if a device along the way caches the old value. Routers and operating systems occasionally do this.
Does this also work for multiple locations?
Yes, each connection gets its own name. For multiple names, there is DynDNS Plus.
